Project Narrative

¥ Increase access to water by rehabilitating the water reticulation system, construct and rehabilitate stands of pipes, increase water storage and water quantities in 10 schools. ¥ Construct or rehabilitate inclusive sanitation blocks and handwashing facilities for both girls and boys reaching 7,500 learners in 10 schools. ¥ Community mobilization/ engagement and government stakeholder consultation and engagement including community leaders, local and district authorities, provincial and national structures. ¥ Conduct baseline and technical assessment studies to determine the situation of water and sanitation in schools. ¥ Promote awareness and adoption of good hygiene practices using WaterAidÕs innovative ABCDE approach to hygiene behavior change. ¥ Training of school governing bodies, teachers in operation and maintenance of WASH facilities to ensure sustainability of WASH services in schools. ¥ Modelling community ownership and involvement of local structures. This would include strengthening the capacity of institutions who have the mandate to provide WASH in schools that can be replicated elsewhere in South Africa to ensure sustainability of the School WASH infrastructure and behavior change. ¥ Influence and engage the communities, national government and local authorities around sustainable and inclusive WASH standards and guidelines for schools. ¥ Engage with national and provincial governments to advocate for more budgetary allocation for WASH in schools to ensure future sustainability of these facilities. ¥ Work with district authorities, municipalities and national government to strengthen coordination and advocating for inclusive national WASH guidelines and standards and School WASH financing.
