Project Overview

American Forests is partnering with Salesforce to support a prescribed fire across 500 acres on the Hoosier National Forest in southern Indiana. We expect the fire to generate 500,000 seedlings. In the Hoosier, oak seedlings are present, but they often are outcompeted by shade-tolerant species such as maple and beech; they will not become overstory trees without a disturbance mechanism to allow them to receive sufficient sunlight. In the Hoosier, oak seedlings are present, but they often are outcompeted by shade-tolerant species such as maple and beech; they will not become overstory trees without a disturbance mechanism to allow them to receive sufficient sunlight. Research has shown that prescribed fire is an effective method of disturbance, both ecologically and respective of cost. In a prescribed fire, oak seedlings have the competitive advantage of being able to easily resprout due to their large root systems
