Project Overview

The project goal is to support the strengthening of long-term conservation mechanisms (Water Funds) in 11 basins of 6 countries in Latin America, implementing actions in the field, investing in more than 5,000 hectares in priority areas of watersheds key for water supply of large cities in the region via Water Funds as the implementing mechanism. This objective is developed jointly between Coca-Cola Company and their local bottlers in each country.

Missed Opportunities

This project is a great starting point to escalate conservation actions in key watersheds. The challenge remains to be how to perform such escalation. We need additional resources to sell the project to other companies to invest in the same objectives.

Project Narrative

Water is a limited and irreplaceable resource that plays a key role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems from which countless goods, services and values are derived that are fundamental to human well-being and the sustainability of its economic activities. For this reason, in October 2013, The Coca Cola Latin Center and its local bottlers Arca Continental, BEPENSA, and Coca Cola – FEMSA joined the Latin American Alliance of Water Funds to create the “Water for the Future” program, with in order to promote and finance conservation projects in 6 countries in the region (Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama and the Dominican Republic), with the focus of re-supplying nature with the amount equivalent to the water they use in their production processes . For this, specific goals were set for each country until 2020. The general objective of the project is to support the strengthening of long-term conservation mechanisms in supply basins in 11 cities in Latin America by implementing actions in the field, investing in at least 5,000 hectares in priority areas of the basins. The expected results are 1) to reduce the indirect corporate risks of a potential decrease in the quality and quantity of water as a result of the deterioration of the supply basins. 2) improve water management in strategic basins for water supply in cities. 3) Promote a public-private partnership scheme for decision-making regarding the conservation of water resources.
