WaterAid is an international NGO focused exclusively on ensuring equitable access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education (WASH) for the world’s poorest communities. Formed in 1981 we have been working in water, sanitation and hygiene for over 30 years. To date we have reached 17.5 million people with safe water and 12.9 million people with improved sanitation. WaterAid works in 27 countries globally, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Central America. Each country operates a national WaterAid Country Programme. These are supported by our offices in the UK, USA, Sweden and Australia. WaterAid has been working in Uganda since 1983. WaterAid Uganda is headquartered in Kampala. Since forming WaterAid Uganda has reached 1,320,000 people with safe water and 170,000 people with sanitation. As with all WaterAid programmes our approach in Uganda combines service delivery work – physically providing access to WASH – with advocacy work – mobilising support for national policies that advance the rights of poor people living without water and sanitation services. WaterAid Uganda are particularly focused on strengthening the planning, coordination, implementation and monitoring of water and sanitation services as provided at a local District level by municipal authorities. WaterAid Uganda are involved in four main areas: 1) Rural areas - integrated water, sanitation and hygiene projects, with a particular focus on post-conflict areas 2) Urban areas - integrated water, sanitation and hygiene projects targeting poor and underserved communities in Kampala 3) Small town areas – pro-poor service delivery; research, learning and regulation. 4) Post-Conflict WASH Project - conflict transformation approaches using technologies such as sand dams to minimise stresses on available water resources. WaterAid Uganda manage 10 projects across eight districts: Amuria, Kampala, Katakwi, Kotido, Masindi, Nakapiripirit, Napak and Pallisa. WaterAid Uganda partners include local NGOs, institutions, national governments, service providers and private sector actors.
