WaterAid is an international NGO focused exclusively on ensuring equitable access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education (WASH) for the world’s poorest communities. Formed in 1981 we have been working in water, sanitation and hygiene for over 30 years. To date we have reached 17.5 million people with safe water and 12.9 million people with improved sanitation. WaterAid works in 27 countries globally, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Central America. Each country operates a national WaterAid Country Programme. These are supported by our offices in the UK, USA, Sweden and Australia. WaterAid has been working in Tanzania since 1983. WaterAid Tanzania is headquartered in Dar es Salaam. Since forming WaterAid Tanzania has reached has reached 1,490,000 people with safe water and 97,000 people with sanitation. As with all WaterAid programmes our approach in Tanzania combines service delivery work – physically providing access to WASH – with advocacy work – mobilising support for national policies that advance the rights of poor people living without water and sanitation services. WaterAid Tanzania are particularly focused on helping poor rural and urban communities set up low-cost, sustainable projects using technologies that are affordable, appropriate to local conditions and which can be maintained by the community themselves. Broadly speaking WaterAid Tanzania is focused on five areas: 1) Rural WASH - improving access to water supplies; improving management of water resources; improving sanitation services and hygiene education for hard to reach rural communities 2) Urban WASH - improving access to water supplies; improving management of water resources; improving sanitation services and hygiene education for poor communities living in slums. 3) Small Towns - improving access to water supplies; improving management of water resources; improving sanitation services and hygiene education for poor disadvantaged groups living without adequate access in small towns. 4) Equity and Inclusion - increasing access to safe water and sanitation for four targeted marginalized groups, in particular those suffering from HIV/AIDS. 5) Schools WASH – improving water and sanitation infrastructure in schools and hygiene education for children WaterAid Tanzania manage 24 projects across 12 regions: Arusha, Dodoma, Lindi, Manyara, Mara, Mtwara, Musoma, Mwanza, Pwani, Ruvuma, Singida and Tabora. WaterAid Tanzania partners include local NGOs, institutions, national governments, service providers and private sector actors.
