Community Overview

Chemicals used in manufacturing process can have harmful effects on workers, the environment, and surrounding communities. Selecting greener chemicals can have positive effects for both water quality and quantity. Chemicals management is a “front of pipe” process that takes place throughout the supply chain, and involves awareness of regulatory requirements, development of restricted substances lists and standard operating procedures for chemical inventory and disposal, and working with suppliers to compile data and build capacity to ensure the safe use and disposal/discharge of chemicals in apparel production.

Collective action can help companies develop standardized systems to help their suppliers provide data, including guidance documents, questionnaires, web portals for chemical data entry, training on chemical data reporting requirements, and support in establishing Environmental Management and Chemical Management Systems. Collective action can also assist in driving the adoption of preferred chemicals that are safer alternatives.
