Increasing demand for the maritime transport, which currently constitutes 80% of the world trade volume, gives Poland an opportunity for development, thanks to its favorable location at the Baltic Sea. The Baltic is one of the most heavily loaded sea areas in the world. It transports around 800 mln tonnes of cargo and 14 mln containers annually. It supports the development of the Polish economy, however, in order to fully realise this potential, it is necessary to create needs mapping of the extension of connections of the ports hinterland, development of the terminals’ infrastructure, construction of platforms and logistic centres. The significance of the Baltic as a transport route for raw materials is also on the rise. The LNG Terminal in Świnoujście is an important step in building the North-South energy corridor. It is incredibly important to realise the potential of not only energy corridors, but also the transport ones. According to the EU policy plans set out in the TEN T program, the corridors, alongside economic centres and ports, will become multi-modal platforms for transport and logistics. This network is also supposed to support environment protection. By International Maritime Organisation’s decision, a specialised UNO agency, the Baltic has received a status of a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) and is specially protected. Simultaneously, economic development based on the realisation of Baltic’s potential constitutes a serious threat to its sensitive ecosystem, which is why it is so crucial to make its development sustainable.

Project Results

The Programs are a platform for knowledge exchange and cooperation for the government, academia and the private sector. Dynamic development of the Program would not be possible without a unique partnership between Global Compact Network Poland and the Polish Ministry of Marine Economy and Inland Navigation, which was established at the end of 2015. The creation of the Ministry was one of the key recommendation arising from the realization of the Program in 2015 based on the series of multidimensional consultations and creation of highly substantive report: Baltic Sea for All.
