Organization Overview

AFORD Foundation (Aid for Development) is a local non-governmental organisation operating in the northern region of Ghana, with its headquarters in Tamale. AFORD was founded in 1996 and registered in 1997 by a group of development workers desiring to assist victims of the 1994 ethnic conflict in the northern region to rebuild their lives.

AFORD is dedicated to assisting poor and deprived communities and vulnerable groups i.e. women and children to improve their standard of living through their own initiatives and efforts. AFORD works with the communities, identifying their needs and initiating and implementing programs to address those needs. We have supported communities in six (6) districts of the Northern Region namely Tamale, Yendi, Savelugu-Nanton, Tolon-Kumbungu, Central and West Gonja, to find innovative, practical and sustainable ways to apply knowledge and improve their health as a catalyst for growth and development of their livelihoods. We have inspired and enabled marginalized and vulnerable people and communities to find their voice, to make it heard, and to take action to improve their own health and well being.

Mission:

Work in partnership, using participatory governance approaches to improve the health and well-being and eventually the livelihoods of disadvantaged and vulnerable people in communities.

OUR STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

AFORD’s works in collaboration, partnership, government agencies and with local communities and other stakeholders to increase and improve access to economic, social services, infrastructure and other development opportunities to the underserved in Ghana.

Specifically, we are working to achieve our vision with the following objectives:

To enhance economic opportunities in deprived communities through skills development, livelihood opportunities, job creation, income generation and poverty reduction.
To improve wellbeing of communities through access to improved safe drinking water, sanitation facilities and basic health and hygiene.
Strengthen the capacity of stakeholders to identify appropriate mechanisms for sustained conservation, protection and utilization of our environmental resources.
Support farmers in the identification and adoption of climate resilient agricultural best practices for increased agricultural production, postharvest loss reduction, processing, job creation, increased incomes and social protection.
To improve knowledge, service delivery and living conditions of communities through capacity development, good governance and access to information
Promote policy dialogue to enhance the formulation and implementation of appropriate development policies for the efficient utilization of resources for poverty reduction and development.
