Region Overview

The Colorado River (Mohave: 'Aha Kwahwat, Havasupai : Ha Ŧay Gʼam or Sil Gsvgov, or in Spanish: Río Colorado) is the principal river of the southwestern United Stated and northwest Mexico . The 1,450-mile (2,330 km) river drains an expansive, arid watershed  that encompasses parts of seven U.S. and two Mexican states. Three-fourths of the Colorado basin is federal land comprised of national forests, national parks, and Indian reservations. The river is the primary source of water for a region that receives little annual rainfalRising in the central Rocky Mountains in the U.S., the river flows generally southwest across the Colorado Plateau and through the Grand Canyon before reaching Lake Mead on the Arizona-Nevada line, where it turns south towards the international border. After entering Mexico, the Colorado historically formed a large delta, emptying into the Gulf of California between Baja California and Sonora, but now generally dries up shortly below the last dam on the river, near the U.S. Mexico border. More than 20 major dams and a complex set of treaties, compacts, laws, and judicial decisions tightly control the river's flows and allocation
