Brazil has faced severe droughts and water scarcity since 2012, causing severe water shortages in southeastern Brazil. Against the backdrop of this complex water governance environment, the CEO Water Mandate worked with CDP, the World Resources Institute, WWF, and UNEP-DHI to develop guidelines for company water stewardship targets. Crucially, the project team created target-setting guidelines at the site level. Because each basin has unique water resource challenges, meaningful targets must take local context into consideration.

The Nature Conservancy, the 2030 Water Resources Group, and SANASA advised this project, engaging stakeholders in the Piracicaba, Capivari, and Jundiaí River Basins and in the Upper Tietê River Basin.

This pilot helped participating companies understand their individual water challenges; engage with peer companies, public sector water agencies, and other stakeholders; set meaningful metrics and targets; and prioritize effective actions to advance water security in the region.

Project Results

By informing key stakeholders of crucial water risks, the pilot study allowed these actors to effectively prioritize water stewardship actions. The study identified effective opportunities for collective action and other interventions. After the study, the CEO Water Mandate will continue to help businesses pursue shared water stewardship opportunities in the region as well as document the lessons learned from the project to inform future stewardship work. Companies interested in water stewardship in this region or more broadly can contact the CEO Water Mandate to learn more.
