Project Overview

The Cutzamala System is the primary offsite water supply source for Mexico City, providing 10 m3/s to the overall flow serving Mexico City (31.5m3/s) (SACMEX 2018), which reaches residents of 13 Mexico City boroughs and 14 State of Mexico municipalities (World Bank 2015). At present, the Cutzamala System is facing serious environmental and social challenges, as it is highly dependent on rainfall and extremely vulnerable to climate change. There is also growing water use pressure and increased pollution at the 7 dams in the system. The Amanalco-Valle de Bravo watershed is part of the Cutzamala river basin and is of particular importance given the environmental support rendered to both the State of Mexico and Mexico City. Since 2013, the PASMIT Program has been in place in the Amanalco-Valle de Bravo basin, aiming to acknowledge and promote landscape and territory active and orderly management, collectively and integrally.
